A larger clinical trial randomly assigned more than 500 patients with type 2 diabetes and symptomatic peripheral neuropathy to one of the following treatments: (i) 600 mg/day of intravenous lipoic acid for three weeks followed by 1,800 mg/day of oral lipoic acid for six months, (ii) 600 mg/day of intravenous lipoic acid for three weeks followed by oral placebo for six months, or (iii) intravenous placebo for three weeks followed by oral placebo for six months (76)
